City of Houston
Situation:
The city sought a way to reduce the impact of green recyclables being landfilled. City officials believed it possible to divert 20% or more of the total municipal waste stream.
Living Earth’s Solution:
- In 2007 and 2008, Living Earth participated in a pilot program with the City of Houston to recycle the city’s green material
- Working together with Living Earth, the city determined that a green material recycling program would benefit the environment, while at the same time generate significant savings for the city compared to disposing of the green material at a landfill
- In addition to prudently conserving landfill resources and returning organic material back into the environment, the program will lower greenhouse gas emissions. City officials estimate the impact of diverting green recyclables from landfills will be the equivalent of taking 10,785 cars off the road for one year
- The program began roll-out city-wide in January 2009
