Discovery Green
Situation:
The City of Houston wanted to increase parking in downtown, while at the same time reducing the environmental impact and beautifying the area around the George Brown Convention Center. Additional benefits would include reducing ambient temperature and mitigating the urban “heat island” effect.
Living Earth’s Solution:
- “Discovery Green” is a public/private partnership to beautify an important area of downtown Houston by essentially installing a park on the roof of an underground parking garage
- Living Earth worked with Gibson’s Landscape Services and Hargreaves Associates, a California-based landscape architecture firm, to arrive at a set of soil blends that met their unique specifications
- The 12 acre, $122 million park/underground parking garage is located in the center of the George Brown Convention Center, Toyota Center and Minute Maid Park complex. While providing increased parking downtown, this park is also a stunning architectural achievement, including an educational building, restaurant, lake, putting green and many other recreational features
